Chocolate Superfood Breakfast Smoothie

This has been my favorite morning smoothie lately. It’s my healthy, superfood-y version of a mocha frappuccino. It’s thick, chocolately (but not overly), energizing, refreshing and smooth; I savor every sip like a morning coffee. But unlike a sugary frapp, it’s made with all-natural, brain-and-beauty-boosting ingredients, and it won’t give you a crash in a few hours.

Here’s the smoothie breakdown: It’s naturally sweetened with a frozen banana (and optional medjool date), there’s a handful of spinach in there you can’t even taste, and the cacao powder (known to boost your mood) gives it a rich, chocolatey flavor. The frozen blueberries pair beautifully with the cacao powder, the flax seeds thicken the smoothie and add a nice, nutty flavor (plus protein/fiber), and there’s a little bit of maca powder for a natural boost in energy (just don’t add too much or it will taste grassy). For the base, I use a mix of coconut water and almond milk. You get the creaminess of almond milk and the refreshing-ness of coconut water. All together, it’s a dream blend.

My boyfriend and I take turns making this smoothie in the mornings—he loves it because it’s easy to whip up (more so than my favorite green smoothie). If you’re looking for a super delicious and energizing morning drink, give this one a try!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 1 handful of frozen blueberries
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp flax seeds (or chia seeds)
  • 1/2 tsp maca powder
  • Optional: 1 pitted medjool date to sweeten

Liquid base

  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup coconut water

Serves 1

Notes

*Use less maca powder if you’re not used to the flavor.

INSTRUCTIONS

Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender. Blend on high for 1-2 minutes until creamy and smooth. Pour into a jar/glass and enjoy. You can also sprinkle some cacao nibs or chocolate granola on top for some extra crunch.
